Time: 2 weeks project | Role: UX UI Designer | Team: 2 designers
For our fourth project at the Ironhack bootcamp, we dove into the world of wellness with a focus on something we all cherish: sleep. We picked sleeping wellness because it's crucial for both our bodies and minds.
Let’s dig a little deeper.
Let’s dive a little deeper into the topic. To get a better understanding of the sleep world, we started by looking at what’s already out there, checking out some existing apps and solutions. Through this secondary research, we explored what others are offering and spotted a few things that might be missing. Here’s what we found:
Sleep is often disrupted by period symptoms.
Most sleep apps lack customization for different menstrual or hormonal cycles.
Insomnia affects 34.2% of women
Hormones affect sleep patterns, especially during different phases of the menstrual cycle — yet most sleep apps ignore this.
Taking all these insights into account, we decided to create Lumu; a sleep app thoughtfully designed with women in mind.
But before we move on, let’s take a closer look at our users’ daily routines.
Let us introduce you to Pamela:
Goals:
Establish a simple nighttime routine that fits into her busy life.
Having a good quality of sleep regularly.
Needs and expectations:
Easy-to-follow advice and tools that fit into her daily routine — especially during her period, when sleep can be harder.
She expects comfort and understanding from the app, right when she needs it.
Let's analyze Pamela's user journey a bit
Before we could define what our MVP should include, we needed to step into our main user’s shoes. Understanding her journey helps us pinpoint where the real struggles happen, so we can focus on solving the right problem. Let’s take a closer look at Pamela’s experience.
While exploring Pamela’s journey, we spotted a few unhealthy habits that, together with her menstrual pain, were making her nights especially tough. That’s why we decided to focus on helping her build a personalized bedtime routine, along with practical advice and tips to improve her sleep.
So, here’s how we framed our problem statement:
Pamela is a hardworking woman trying to get better sleep while navigating the ups and downs of her menstrual cycle. She’s looking for a way to make smarter choices and build a sleep routine that actually works for her.
Lumu Video - first steps
Let me introduce you to Lumu.
The first mobile app that truly cares about women's sleep quality — because women’s rest matters.
Let’s see what it’s like when you open Lumu for the first time and add your first activity to your routine. The app gently guides you through a quick onboarding, asking for a few basics like your name and age. If you’ve already got health data saved on your device (like in the Health app on iOS), Lumu will ask for permission to access it, so you can kick things off with helpful insights right from the start. Check out the video below!
But what happens if Pamela wakes up in the middle of the night?
Lumu gently suggests closing some apps to help you start winding down. If you’ve given permission, it’ll even switch your screen to grayscale, making it easier on your eyes. And if you happen to open the app in the middle of the night, don’t worry. You’ll just see your routine progress and a few calming, sleep-friendly tips to help you drift back to sleep.

Lumu - morning questions
On the following morning…
The next morning, Lumu gently switches from night mode to day mode and checks in with you, asking how you’re feeling and if you experienced any symptoms during the night. Based on your answers, it offers personalized suggestions for activities and routines to help you feel your best throughout the day.
Additionals
We also thought about little details to make the experience even better, like friendly error messages that guide you through any tricky moments without stress. Lumu includes customizable widgets in medium and large sizes, so you can make your home screen feel more like you. And of course, we made sure to include Apple Watch notifications, so you can stay calm and in the loop about your sleep patterns and helpful tips, all from your wrist.

Conclusion for the MVP
The MVP of our app focuses on delivering a personalized and user-centered solution to help women improve their sleep quality, taking into account important factors like the menstrual cycle and emotional well-being. With a simple yet impactful feature set, the MVP allows us to validate key user interactions, track engagement, and assess which recommendations truly enhance rest.
This initial release was developed using an iterative design process, supported by user research, usability testing, and data-driven decisions. It provides a strong foundation for future product iterations and helps us continue building a scalable, accessible, and inclusive digital experience that promotes healthy sleep habits and overall wellness.
